Golds Gym Applauds Joining Forces and Let's Move! Initiatives

Fitness Industry Provides Free Health Club Memberships to Military Families as Part of Joining Forces and Let's Move! Initiatives

Washington, DC, May 9, 2011-Executives from the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA) joined First Lady Michelle Obama on the South Lawn of the White House today to announce the launch of the IHRSA Joining Forces Network-an affiliation of health clubs throughout the country that will offer free memberships to immediate family members of actively deployed reservists and National Guard members. The announcement took place at a health and wellness event for military families hosted by Mrs. Obama which combined the Joining Forces and Let's Move initiatives.

Joining Forces is a comprehensive national initiative launched by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden to mobilize all sectors of society to give our service members and their families the opportunities and support they have earned. Let's Move! is also a  comprehensive initiative launched by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the problem of obesity within a generation so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams.

"The freedoms that each of us enjoys every day are possible because of the sacrifices that our nation's military families bear," said Joe Moore, IHRSA's President and CEO.  "Joining Forces offers us an opportunity to provide these families with the support they are due."

The IHRSA Joining Forces Network hopes to offer at least 100,000 free health club memberships throughout the country-the equivalent of more than 18 million days of free access to health clubs and an estimated value of more than $30 million.

Clubs also may provide additional benefits, such as childcare, children's programming, group classes, discounts for veterans, and discounts for active duty families.

"Rooted in communities all across America, IHRSA health clubs stand ready to serve our nation's military families," said Moore. "We are here to offer them safe, supportive environments where they can exercise and find encouragement in their efforts to stay well through healthy lifestyle choices. We are deeply honored to be part of the Joining Forces and Let's Move! initiatives."

Beginning June 1st, eligible military families can find participating clubs in their area online at www.healthclubs.com. The website also offers a free digital subscription to Get Active! Magazine, a consumer resource dedicated to promoting the benefits of safe and effective exercise, and offers useful advice on making healthy lifestyle choices.

Moore also noted that IHRSA is particularly excited about the opportunity that these free memberships will provide for the teenaged children of deployed reservists and National Guard members, who will now have access to positive health club environments where they can stay physically active and feel supported in making smart lifestyle choices. IHRSA has been an outspoken supporter of the Let's Move! initiative since its inception.

The Next Big Fitness Program Producing Startling Results in Middletown

The next big thing to hit fitness is here in Middletown NY! FIT-traxx is a truly revolutionary approach to how people are getting fit and it has never been easier.

The program’s creators have not only made fitness simple to understand and do, they have come up with a way to make the time fly by. “The simplicity of the program makes it look quite simple, but the science behind the program is what makes it so effective,” says Bob Roche, one of the area’s most successful health club owners. The heart of the program is that people are put into small supervised groups so the intensity can be regulated and form can be monitored easily. Roche says, “When participants do the right things, in the right order, the right way, they get results!”

It is a total fitness approach, so not only are your workouts at the club monitored, you are provided with a complete plan for each day. “I have never seen such consistently dramatic results from a program,” says John Bonica, part of the FIT-traxx program development team. “This is the next big trend in fitness for many reasons. It is simple. Virtually anybody can do the program and it covers all aspects of fitness including strength training, cardiovascular training and nutrition.”

What makes FIT-traxx so unique? First, the program uses very little equipment which means that the exercises fit everybody no matter their size, shape or fitness level. Second, working in small groups provides camaraderie, accountability and fun. Third, all the exercises are “functional”, so not only do they help you lose unwanted pounds and inches, you will do everything better from your job – to gardening and yard work, to skiing and golf. The last thing that makes FIT-traxx so unique is summed up in its tagline: “It’s the Path to Fitness.”

FIT-traxx can fit into anyone’s busy schedule because the program takes only 60 minutes 2 to 3 times per week. Also, you don’t even have to be a member of Gold’s Gym to participate. “This is what I would call solution-based programming as it doesn’t require any long term commitment and it addresses a specific need,” says Roche.

For more information regarding FIT-traxx call Gold’s Gym in Middletown at 845-344-4653 and reserve a spot at our Free FIT-traxx Demo Days coming up soon.

2nd Annual Hollywood's Hottest Bodies Awards

clip_image004.jpg

Because some of Hollywood's greatest performances happen at the gym, we're honoring the year's most incredible body transformations in television and film.

clip_image004This year celebrities have already received golden statuettes for their performances on-screen, but don't roll up the red carpet just yet. Now—just in time for beach season—we want to award the hard work that makes them look chiseled and toned even when the cameras aren't rolling.

"It takes about three months of intense training at the gym to prepare for a six-second shot of a celebrity with his shirt off," says Mike Ryan, the trainer responsible for the six-pack smorgasbords on display in Fight Club and The Scorpion King.

But do awards panels take note? Hardly. That's why Gold's Gym and US Weekly are proud to announce the second annual Gold's Gym Hollywood's Hottest Bodies Awards. Our goal is to celebrate Hollywood's hottest, most talked about transformations—and the bodies that put them a rep above the rest.

"You need to have willpower to mold a superhero body," says Gold's Gym Fitness Institute trainer Ramona Braganza, who has whipped countless celebrities including cast members of the X-men trilogy into shape. "In addition to working with a trainer, actors also have to do fight training, so they end up being quite active for a large part of the day."

To bulk up for a role following a star turn as a cancer victim, one leading man turned to Ryan to help him—with hardcore 12-hour workouts every day for one month. "It was just train, run, eat, sleep," Ryan recalls.

For another film, Ryan helped one A-lister put on 10 pounds of muscle in just three months, through a punishing combination of strength training, wrestling and cardio—which not everyone is cut out for.

"That's too extreme for most people," Ryan admits. "He was just a maniac. When I saw what he did and the guts he put on—he led by example."

Starting May 9, log on to usmagazine.com to check out the nominees and vote for your favorite stars. Then check back on May 23, to find out which ten stars muscled their way to the top.

Kanye West's "Stronger" Crowned Greatest Workout Song of All Time in Gold's Gym's March Music Madness

Celebrities, Members and General Public Determine Ultimate Workout Song In First-Ever Battle of the iPod All Stars; 'Stronger' Bests 63 Other Popular Songs in Tournament Style Competition

Gold's Gym, the world's leading authority in health and fitness, announced today that Kanye West can officially lay claim to the strongest song in the gym. After an intense nationwide vote, his popular track, nominated by Super Bowl XLII champion Michael Strahan, survived a star-studded bracket of 64 iPod all-stars to be named the greatest workout song of all time.

"Stronger," West's 2007 hit from his "Graduation" album, was voted the winner in Gold's Gym's first ever March Music Madness competition.  The competition was designed to put an end to the age old debate about what song really is the best for working out. Whether it's music from "Rocky," hip hop, hair bands, pop or metal, people have always had strong opinions. Gold's Gym's March Music Madness answered the question once and for all….or at least until next year.

Hundreds of nominations from celebrities, fans of music and gym members alike were submitted from around the country.  Sixty-four of the most popular nominations were chosen by Gold's Gym celebrity trainers and fitness experts to go head-to-head in the bracket-style competition.  With more than 20,000 votes logged during the event, West's "Stronger"…nominated for the competition by FOX NFL Sunday Analyst and former New York Giant Michael Strahan…emerged from a "Final Four" that included Eminem's "Lose Yourself," Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" and Guns N Roses "Welcome to The Jungle."

As part of the competition, Gold's Gym offered to donate $5,000 to the charity of choice of the person who nominated the winning song.  The charities represented by each of the 64 songs spanned the gamut and added an extra layer of passion to the competition. For nominating the winning song, Gold's Gym will make a donation on behalf of Strahan to the Health & Humanitarian Aid Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing medical and humanitarian aid to those whose lives have been affected by famine, war, poverty or natural disaster.

"Music is such a huge part of the workout experience," said Lisa Zoellner, Chief Marketing Officer for Gold's Gym International.  "We wanted to pay tribute to the artists and songs that play such a big role in inspiring people to exercise… and that keep them motivated every day.  With this fun competition, we were able to find out what our members are listening to, motivate them and give back to a great cause, all at the same time."

"I was thrilled to hear that 'Stronger' won the March Music Madness Bracket Challenge," said Michael Strahan.  "The song brings back great memories of Super Bowl XLII (The New York Giants came out to 'Stronger' before beating the New England Patriots 17-14) and is still on my iPod everyday in the gym.  What's even more special is that I get to share this win with my friend Sammy Arthur, with the proceeds going to his charity, The Health & Humanitarian Aid Foundation."

Other celebrities who took part in the charity-focused initiative included Will Ferrell, who nominated "Pump Up the Jam" by Technotronic; Mario Lopez, who nominated "Gonna Fly Now (AKA theme from Rocky)" by Bill Conti; Brooke Shields, who nominated "Hot Blooded" by Foreigner; Gabrielle Reece, who nominated "B.O.B." by Outkast and Ryan Sheckler, who nominated "KickStart my Heart" by Motley Crue.
